Rugs of India: Black Mountain Looms

The Oriental Rug Bloghttp://www.internetrugs.com/blog/rugs-of-india-black-mountain-looms/ [The Oriental Rug Blog] At some point he had become aware of the Azeri rugs George Jevremovic was making in Turkey with natural dyes, and, inspired by them, he began to experiment with natural dyes in India. Quite likely he was the first American to do so, and at a time when probably no Indians were using natural dyes except, perhaps, as hobbyists.

John McCain and Teheran's tools

The RBC[The RBC] There's no doubt that Iran is fishing troubled waters, or that an Iraq not occupied by U.S. forces would tend to drift into the Iranian orbit: to the Iraqi Shi'a majority, oppressed by the Sunni secularist Saddam Hussein and double-crossed by Bush the First, James Baker, and Colin Powell, Iran was the one reliable source of support in dark times, and several of the currently dominant Iraqi politicians spent a time in Iranian exile.

the persia of persepolis

a secret inside girl.http://secretinsidegirl.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/the-persia-of-persepolis/ [a secret inside girl.] in Austria).  The autobiographical form lends nicely to the graphic novel: we get, clearly, a biased account of the historical events of the period but blended so nicely with details of Satrapi’s family and Marji’s childhood and preteen memories.  For example, we learn quite a bit of the history of the Shahs and the intelligentsia of Iran (mainly, it seems, Communists, Socialists, Radicals) through Marjane’s uncle, who, while imprisoned, fashioned a duck made out of bread crumbs for his niece.  The night before Marjane leaves for Austria as a teenager, she cuddles with her grandmother who smells nice because she keeps jasmine blossoms in her bra all day.  Much later, the adult Marjane is running to catch the bus and Hezbollah guards stop her, chastising her for running because it forces her ass to make suggestive movements.  Wonderfully, Marjane responds by yelling, “Then don’t look at my ass!”  I like, mostly, the way Marjane represents a Middle Eastern girl (and then woman) that contradicts mainstream (okay, conservative) American conceptions of Middle Eastern women: either downtrodden and repressed, or screeching with anti-American hate.  A very western way of looking at it, I think: either pro-West or anti-West.  No matter what, the West is at the center.  Satrapi’s characters love their country and do not, of course, conceptualize themselves against western culture, even though they come into sometimes violent contact with the products of western culture.  Marjane represents one of the many types of women in Iranian culture, and I appreciate and am excited by the demystification of the Middle East.

Rugs of India: Gertmenian Carpets

The Oriental Rug Bloghttp://www.internetrugs.com/blog/rugs-of-india-gertmenian-carpets/ [The Oriental Rug Blog] He agrees that we are enjoying a golden age of Oriental rugs, and one of its features, he says, is the sheer number and diversity of good products available. In part, he attributes the healthy diversity of rugs in India to the fact that for the past four or five years German demand has been soft, stimulating India to cater to the more demanding American market.

New Prince of Persia goes open-world

That VideoGame Blog[That VideoGame Blog] As it was already known, the game is being worked on at Ubisoft Montreal, the same studio that created the Sands of Time trilogy (The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, The Two Thrones). While people are being brought in from other projects, the core team working on the new game has remained the same as it was with the trilogy, meaning the game is in experienced and very capable hands.
