For those who became weary or disinterested in the bizarre story of Michael Jackson, the love affair of the governor of South Carolina filled in any remaining spaces and the Iranian drama disappeared from broadcast and print/online news almost altogether.

[Liberate the Mind] Ibrahim Al-Marashi - Iran between a War of the Airwaves and a ...: Exactly thirty years after the Iranian Revolution, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, and the pictures and videos Iranians take with their cell phones have become the 21st century version of the cassette tape. Indeed, Youtube gave life after death to the young victim Neda Agha Sultan, just as the televised death of the young boy Muhammad al-Durrah during a clash with Israeli soldiers became the symbol of the Palestinian Al-Aqsa Intifadha of 2000. The video of Neda has raised questions about how can one verify the events captured on the cell phones of Iranians. Critics of her video have asked, “How can we know that the event we watched is real?” The answer to this question can be answered with a similar tragedy that took place in Iran prior to the fall of the Shah. In the city of Abadan, a fire killed 300 Iranians in a movie theater. While the Shah sought to blame the tragedy on fundamentalists who wanted to destroy a cinema, a symbol of the “decadent West,” the Iranian public believed that the Shahs secret police was behind the fire. It was an event that signaled the final downfall of the Shah. Thus, if the Iranian public believes that Ahmadinejad allied militia, the Basij, was responsible for Nedas death, than the narrative surrounding Nedas death will take on a life of its own. It doesnt matter if her death cannot be verified.

[The Lede] July 9: Updates on the Protests in Iran - The Lede Blog - NYTimes.com: Having seen how easily and effectively the Iranian Islamic military, paramilitary and police forces could crush the resistance, I understand why our Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and our President so fear a military confrontation with these warriors who trace their origins back to the Persian fighters who with no more than a 10,000 to one advantage, drove back and conquered the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, in ancient Greece. Despite multiple insults against the United States over the years, seizing our embassy in Tehran and imprisoning our diplomatic staff for close to two years, being behind the murder by suicide bomber of 241 US Marine peacekeepers in Beirut in the 80s, and being behind the deaths of countless US troops and NGO staff in Iraq recently via their equipping with EFPs and IEDs, training, funding and motivating terrorists and insurgents in Iraq, the US, apparently fearing the awesome response of these “immortals”
