[Liberate the Mind] Ibrahim Al-Marashi - Iran between a War of the Airwaves and a ...: Exactly thirty years after the Iranian Revolution, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, and the pictures and videos Iranians take with their cell phones have become the 21st century version of the cassette tape.  Indeed, Youtube gave life after death to the young victim Neda Agha Sultan, just as the televised death of the young boy Muhammad al-Durrah during a clash with Israeli soldiers became the symbol of the Palestinian Al-Aqsa Intifadha of 2000.  The video of Neda has raised questions about how can one verify the events captured on the cell phones of Iranians.  Critics of her video have asked, “How can we know that the event we watched is real?”  The answer to this question can be answered with a similar tragedy that took place in Iran prior to the fall of the Shah.  In the city of Abadan, a fire killed 300 Iranians in a movie theater.  While the Shah sought to blame the tragedy on fundamentalists who wanted to destroy a cinema, a symbol of the “decadent West,” the Iranian public believed that the Shah’s secret police was behind the fire.  It was an event that signaled the final downfall of the Shah.  Thus, if the Iranian public believes that Ahmadinejad allied militia, the Basij, was responsible for Neda’s death, than the narrative surrounding Neda’s death will take on a life of its own.  It doesn’t matter if her death cannot be verified.
