[Commentary] (remember, folks like Khameini and Rafsanjani aren’t getting any younger - the old will be replaced by younger, more moderate forces in Iran) If it takes a win by a guy who is more moderate than Ahmadinejad (not hard to do) but hardly a democrat, I’ll take it. And I don’t care whether or not Obama’s Cairo speech had any effect - any election that shuffles Ahmadinejad out the door in favor of a relatively more moderate guy is welcome in my book.

[The Moderate Voice] Iran's Election: Will There “Be Blood” And Will Its “Revolution ...: If Iran spurns Obama's overtures to it and follows on its nuclear and anti-Israel path, Obama has not kept for himself a fall-back option. In his anxiety to project a "good guy" image of himself right across the Islamic world, including Iran, Obama has unwittingly encouraged hard-line elements such as Ahmadinejad, who have no genuine love for the U.S. and who will lose no opportunity to make the interests of the Islamic world prevail over those of the international community.
[San Francisco Sentinel] San Francisco Sentinel » Blog Archives » FIVE REASONS TO SUSPECT ...: Gary Sick, a Columbia University professor and Iranian affairs adviser for three U.S. administrations, said that given the apparent record turnout, it would have been impossible to announce a definitive result so soon after the polls closed because Iran does not use voting machines. The country uses paper ballots which must be counted by hand, a time-consuming process, Sick said in an interview posted on the Council on Foreign Relations website.
[Lux Libertas - Light and Liberty] Rage Smolders in Iran | Lux Libertas - Light and Liberty: It was Mother’s Day in Iran Sunday, but the flower shops that were open said their sales were far less than what they normally sold. One florist in central Tehran, at a cross section where both sides clashed, said he had sheltered more protesters than catered to customers.
[Washington Examiner Site Feed] Iranian government claims Ahmadinejad winner | Washington Examiner: There were worries of protests by Mousavi supporters if he is declared the loser, though there was no sign of gatherings Saturday morning. About a dozen supporters sitting on chairs outside one of his campaign offices in central Tehran said they were waiting to hear from their candidate before deciding what action, if any, to take.
[EAGELES-OF-USA1- | Blog Talk Radio Feed] Iran election anger boils: But Ahmadinejad today suggested he would not change course on major foreign and domestic issues that have made him a lightning rod of criticism for the West. He repeated his willingness to "debate" Obama publicly at the United Nations, and downplayed international concerns about Iran's nuclear research program, which Western nations believe is aimed at developing nuclear weapons and Iran says is for civilian purposes.
[Alarabiya.net English | Latest News] Middle East News | Ahmadinejad wins landslide victory in Iran vote: Ahmadinejad won power four years ago on a pledge to revive the values of the 1979 Islamic revolution. He has steadily built up Iran's nuclear program, rejecting Western charges that it is aimed at building an atomic bomb, and stirred international outrage by denying the Holocaust and calling for Israel to be wiped from the map.
[Market Headlines from CNBC] Iran's Re-Election of Ahmadinejad Stirs Caution - General * US ...: Ahmadinejad's announced landslide victory over his reformist opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, in a tumultuous election marred by allegations of widespread fraud, "will increase American pressure" to engage Iran diplomatically, said Eyal Zisser, an analyst with the Tel Aviv-based Moshe Dayan Center.
[Political Punch] Iran: The View from the White House - Political Punch: It's worth keeping in mind that President Obama expressing concern for, say, Mir-Hossein Moussavi, wouldn't necessarily be a way to help Moussavi. President Obama on Friday, and Secretary of State Clinton and White House press secretary Robert Gibbs since then, have all spoken about the enthusiasm among Iran's young people, and in so doing seem to be taking a long-term view.
[Get 2 Vote] My win was real and free ..angry losers are not important to me ...: And as violent clashes continued in Tehran, he blamed the row over his re-election on “Western oppressors” who wanted his more moderate main rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, to win. He described his victory as a triumph over Iran's enemies and said: “The era of a few countries making decisions for the rest of the world has come to an end.” Ahmadinejad shrugged off questions about Iran's nuclear programme, claiming that the issue “belongs to the past”.

Now he is well and truly stuck - he either abandons his commitment and refuses to deal with the now-illegitimate leader of Iran, thereby abandoning his biggest “change”
[race42008.com] race42008.com » Blog Archive » The End Of NeoConservatism?: Neoconservatives tend to see this through the filters of Iran’s nuclear program and Israel (two things that they have become preoccupied with at the expense of other issues), while neoliberals tend to not have those filters and instead see it as a question of freedom. I think the (neo)liberals are right in this case because the more freedom and power over their own lives that people have, the less likely they will be to lash out at another country as a scapegoat for all of their problems.
[KURDISH BLOG] Ahmadinejad set for crushing win in disputed Iran vote - KURDISH BLOG: Iran has long been at loggerheads with the West as Ahmadinejad delivered a succession of fiery tirades against Israel, repeatedly questioned the Holocaust and vowed to press on with nuclear work despite UN sanctions, denying allegations Tehran was seeking the atomic bomb.
[San Francisco Sentinel] San Francisco Sentinel » Blog Archives » AHMADINEJAD HEADED FOR ...: US President Barack Obama held out the ”possibility of change” in US-Iran ties, but his administration insisted Tehran halt its sensitive nuclear work no matter who wins the elections there. Obama spoke of such a possibility whether the election is won by incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is seeking a second four-year term, or by reformist former premier Mir Hossein Mousavi.
[Hot Air » Top Picks] Hot Air » Blog Archive » Khameini orders mullahs to probe vote count: Of course, that’s why they have Ahmadinejad in the first place. The mullahs use the president and the assembly for two reasons. It gives the illusion of participatory democracy in a country strictly run by a panel of theocrats, which keeps the pressure off of the mullahs most of the time. When the pressure becomes too intense, as it appears to be getting at the moment, this mechanism also provides handy patsies to toss to the crowds.
[The Gaea News] Ahmadinejad's pro-reform challenger calls on Iranian authorities ...: Conservative rival raps Iran president on economyTEHRAN, Iran ” A conservative challenger to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed Friday to "save" Iran's economy if elected, accusing the hard-line leader of pushing the country "on the edge of a precipice."Mohsen Rezaei, a former head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, is not seen as a leading challenger to the president in the June 12 election, but reformists hope Rezaei will weaken Ahmadinejad by taking votes from within the incumbent's own conservative camp. Reformists, who seek an easing of social and political restrictions at home and better ties with the West, see a strong opportunity to unseat Ahmadinejad, who has become increasingly unpopular because of Iran's economic woes.
[Joels Trumpet] Joels Trumpet » Blog Archive » Violence flares as Ahmadinejad wins ...: Not that I knew who would win, but that if the Lord is soon to come, and we are in fact on the cusp of the “end times”, a re-election - whether by hook, crook, or square - by Ahmedinijhad seems to fit what would be the necessary mood and efforts made by Iran as per the Bible, specifically as pertains to Ezekiel.
