[Commentary] so to speak, didn’t take Israel’s side. Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah managed to turn himself into a heroic big shot for a while by taking the fight to the enemy, but the most recent victims of Hezbollah’s violence were Sunnis in Beirut in 2008, and no one in the Middle East has forgotten it.

Terrorist and guerrilla armies are hard to deter, but rational actors like Syria aren’t, and even Khamenei himself may pressure Nasrallah to take it easy if he thinks Tehran might get hit if he doesn’t.
[INTIFADA] Goldstone found that Israel's Collective Punishment Policy in ...: Friend, the entire term "anti-Semite has takenon a meaning absolutely unrelated to Semites,Semitism, and one's attitude toward them, and has been given new and inappropriatemeaning as a term of opprobrium to be appliedto any critics of Jews, Judaism, Israel, Zion orZionism, all of which have very little to do withSemites and Semitism, but if that is thedefinition which they wish to apply the theterms, and those are the definitions of the termswhich the general English speaking public choseto accept, then I think we should all adapt to,accept and be happy with being castigated as"Anti-Semites."'
[Israel News] Israel News: Goldstone exposed: It is far more accusatory of Israel, far less balanced in its criticism of Hamas, far less honest in its evaluation of the evidence, far less responsible in drawing its conclusion, far more biased against Israeli than Palestinian witnesses, and far more willing to draw adverse inferences of intentionality from Israeli conduct and statements than from comparable Palestinian conduct and statements. It is worse than any report previously prepared by any other United Nations agency or human rights group.
[Mondoweiss] The adviser who never was: And what you will see is that the current impasse was predicted completely by Khalidi four years ago: continued Israeli expansion, apartheid, denial of rights, Palestinian humiliation and rage, and the destruction of the American reputation overseas because of our imbalanced policy. Khalidi didn’t predict the remarkable nonviolent movement that has arisen in recent years–still he saw that the "captives of the powerful Israeli nation-state"
[Commentary] Commentary » Blog Archive » The Eclipsing of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: As recently as 2006, Iran, despite the fact that it has a Persian and Shia majority, picked up considerable cache among Sunni Arabs for attacking Israel from Lebanon with its Hezbollah proxy. (Lebanese Sunnis weren’t very happy about it, but Sunnis in Egypt and Syria certainly were.) The Egyptian and Saudi governments were alarmed, and they condemned Hezbollah for sparking the conflict.
[American Empire Project] American Empire Project: Commentary From Noam Chomsky: When the US and Israel decided to punish Palestinians severely last February for voting the wrong way in a free election, Israel stepped up attacks, tightened the imprisonment, and withheld desperately needed funds it was obligated to provide, and even cut off water to the Strip, which suffers from severe water shortages. The few thousand Jewish settlers there, who had been given much of the arable land and precious water supplies and were protected by a large part of the Israeli army, were removed to other parts of the occupied territories, where Israel expanded its illegal programs of annexation, dismemberment and imprisonment, now under the cynical guise of “convergence.” Israel is annexing valuable Palestinian lands and resources (primarily water) behind its Separation Wall - now in effect an Annexation Wall -- declared illegal by the World Court.
[The Reid Report] Reidblog [The Reid Report blog]: Framing the issue: I'm pulling all of my information on the Israeli-Lebanese fighting from non-U.S. news sources at this point, although I have to say the MSNBC and CNN coverage has been surprisingly balanced, given the normal bent of U.S. television news coverage, which adopts the Bushian framing of everything that happens in the world in terms of "the terrorists" and "those fighting the terrorists." Perhaps that's only because the weekend crew doesn't include either Kyra Phillips, Norah O'Donnell or Wolf Blitzer .

[San Francisco Sentinel] San Francisco Sentinel » Blog Archives » THE CASE AGAINST THE ...: The IDF posted a January 8, 2009 aerial video of a militant setting an improvised explosive device and then climbing into a house where, when approached by the IDF, civilians began waving white flags.[130] Other videos show: on December 30, 2008 Israeli forces destroying smuggling tunnels in the immediate vicinity of homes, with multiple secondary explosions indicating presence of rockets;[131] on January 6, 2009, a house struck by Israeli fire, followed by multiple secondary explosions, indicating storage of hidden rockets, and an armed rocket launcher located between homes;[132] and on January 7, 2009, an anti-aircraft gun positioned on a civilian building and a mortar being fired from a residential rooftop. [133] The IDF also posted photos showing an underground rocket launch pad located in a residential area[134] and weapons, including grenades, stored in a house during Operation Cast Lead.[135] The Israeli NGO Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center has published a report documenting even more photographic evidence of residences being used to store, fire, and manufacture weapons.[136] A video from Al-Aqsa TV on January 6, 2009 clearly shows men firing mortars from a civilian area in Gaza.[137] Here are two photographs showing rockets fired from densely populated areas during Operation Cast Lead.[138]

[Syria Comment] Syria Comment » Archives » “Greater Syria” and “Turkey's slide ...: For its part, Israel should insist that Syria erase from its bilateral military agreements with Iran the anti-Israel clauses and eliminate Hizbullah’s arsenal of missiles and rockets. In return, Israel should undertake to withdraw from the Golan Heights (and Shaba Farms) within the framework of a peace agreement modeled on the 1979 Egypt-Israel treaty, meaning demilitarization and effective supervision of the Golan Heights, diplomatic, economic and cultural relations with Syria and cessation of Syrian anti-Israel and anti-Jewish incitement.
