Opendemocracy.nethttp://www.opendemocracy.net [Opendemocracy.net] Organised by the international NGO Women for Women, and judiciously situated outside Iraq, on the Jordanian shores of the Dead Sea, it focused on how best to replace restrictive laws and practices so the new constitution conforms to international agreements, particularly the jewel in the crown, the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (Cedaw). Around 60 Iraqi men and women parliamentarians, academics, activists and members of the drafting committee for the constitution risked their lives to attend.

Fdd.typepad.com[Fdd.typepad.com] FDD: Iraq Women and Constitution: On Thursday, July 19, the Iraqi Women's Network, (Iraqi al-Amal), an umbrella group of close to 50 Iraqi women's groups, organized a sit-in in Baghdad's Fardous Square that rallied an estimated 200 people, followed by a meeting with the Constitutional Drafting Committee. Hanaa Edwar, the head of the Iraqi Women's Network, described the meeting in an e-mail to the Women's Alliance for a Democratic Iraq (the successor organization to the Women for a Free Iraq):

Carter asks Straw to use his "influence and power to postpone the date for delivery of the [new Iraq] constitution until it properly reflects respects for internationally endorsed human rights ”” of men and women, and boys and girls, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, age, or marital status."
