[Cricketdiane's Weblog] The brief version of what I have found about the causes of the ...: Within months of being set-up, the OSP rivaled both the CIA and the Pentagons Defense Intelligence Agency, the DIA, as President Bushs main source of intelligence regarding Iraqs possible possession of weapons of mass destruction and connection with Al Qaeda. Hersh explains that the OSP relied on data gathered by other intelligence agencies and also on information provided by the Iraqi National Congress, or I.N.C., the exile group headed by Ahmad Chalabi. According to Kampfner, the CIA had ended its funding of the I.N.C. in the mid-1990s when doubts were cast about Chalabis reliability. Nevertheless as the administration geared up for conflict with Saddam, Chalabi was welcomed in the inner sanctum of the Pentagon under the auspices of the OSP, and Wolfowitz did not see fit to challenge any of Chalabis information. The actions of the OSP have led to accusation of the Bush administration fixing intelligence to support policy with the aim of influencing Congress in its use of the War Powers Act.[38]

[Political Animal] The Washington Monthly: In short -- like Brent Scowcroft, who recently complained plaintively in the NY Times that he "no longer knows Dick Cheney" -- we (and the Congressional Dems and GOP alike) got snookered by the fact that Cheney and Rumsfeld had turned into a couple of suicidal lunatics who were willing, in the name of their own newly acquired self-destructively reckless tendencies, to lie through their teeth to Congress about the strength of the evidence of Iraq's nuclear program in pursuit of the above-mentioned Chalabi-inspired will-o'-the-wisp of an easily reformable Iraq. Well, failure to foresee a wave of sudden and totally unexpected (and still inexplicable) suicidal lunacy on the part of the nation's two guiding officials isn't exactly an indication of stupidity on Congress' part.
[The Volokh Conspiracy] The Volokh Conspiracy - Justice Souter and Accidents of History:: "In Souter's case, it is my opinion that Souter's unpreparedness for the job manifested it in his inability to carry the weight of the Supreme Court robe. He never really seemed to have any coherent idea of what the judge's proper role was."surely the TA would write something in the margin about needing to provide some supporting evidence. And if a surgeon picked up a gun and shot a lot of people, we'd probably arrest him, but that doesn't mean we'd do the same for a U.S. Marine.
[Recent Posts at Lightstalkers] Photographer Bilal Hussein, in jail in Baghdad | Lightstalkers: . Even after 60 years most of the public is not aware that European Americans were selectively interned, incarcerated for years, denied habeas corpus, and never charged with any criminal acts. Many were arrested in the middle of the night based on hersay evidence, lies and distortions. Unfortunately, after watching the abuse of Guantanamo, and the illegal wiretapping program I am not sure that Americans even understand the consequences of not investigating these abuses. Unless it happens to them personally, they do not get the connection that it could happen to them.
