[Mondoweiss] A self-interview by Mohammad with Mohammad on the anniversary of ...: On the level of ideas, most social groups were equal in terms of their contribution to the revolutionary discourse, but one needs to be reminded that the material basis for the Iranian revolution was the overwhelming size of the crowds involved on the streets. The rapid growth of this crowd, from only a few thousands in the August of 1978 to more than 5 million people on the eve of Ayatollah Khomeinis return to the country in February of 1979, was the basis of the armys reluctance in suppressing the uprising and taking a neutral stance in the final days of Shah.

I took part in a discussion with some active members of the Egyptian and Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood organizations and they were searching for a democratic example derived from Islam so I said to them, We already did what you are trying to do now in Iran 30 years ago and we failed so do not follow the same path, which is to try and harmonize between the interpretation of Islam, not Islam itself, and democracy. [The New America Foundation -] Anatomy of a Civil War | The New America Foundation: It was one day after the incident that Muqtada had mentioned in his sermon: a still little-understood American raid on the Mustafa Husseiniya that had inflamed Shia rage against Americans but had secretly satisfied many Sunnis. A statement issued later that day by the U.S. military said, “Iraqi special-operations forces conducted a twilight raid today in the Adhamiyah neighborhood in northeast Baghdad to disrupt a terrorist cell responsible for attacks on Iraqi security and coalition forces and kidnapping Iraqi civilians in the local area.” It added that “no mosques were entered or damaged” and that the operation was conducted at dusk to “ensure no civilians were in the area and to minimize the possibility of collateral damage.” It also claimed that U.S. forces were merely present as advisers;
[Shia The Right Path] SHIA_SUNNI We Defend The Truth, You Spread It”¦ « Shia The Right Path: With the changing faces of the muslim countries in the modern world, it is but logical to revive the Islamic value of muta to prevent sins such as premarital relationships. A couple need not marry in muta for sexual relation, but it can be for other reasons as well, such as a couple who wish to know each other better before marriage, a time period usually marked in todays society as “engagement.” With muta marriage, the boy and girl are mahram for each other since they enter into a contract of temporary marriage & can get to know each other better before a long term commitment. Sometimes a male and female wish to marry but due to circumstances are unable to do that due to financial problems or the inablility to manage a family after marriage. Muta gives the couple the right to be married without financial burdens of a permanent wife. Several other reasons exist behind the concept of muta, of which I have managed to explain a few major ones that people usually resort to.
