Iran Reviews > Lakeside Musing: Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood

[Lakeside Musing] I didn't like the 2nd Persepolis volume as much as the first - it has less to do with Iran and with history and more to do with being a teen with drugs and drinking and identity. On the other hand, I LOVED Embroideries and Chicken With Plums, her biography of her uncle, a famous Iranian musician.

Each episode is illustrated with Satrapi’s characteristic, almost childlike drawings, which take on the stark expressiveness of block prints.

[AHHH! My Indie Cred] Persepolis: “The original French version of this adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s sensitive and sharp autobiographical graphic novel picked up the Prix du Jury at last year’s Cannes and was nominated for the animated feature Oscar earlier this year. Now there’s an English-language version, with Sean Penn voicing Marjane’s sensible, caring father, Chiara Mastroianni reprising her role as Marjane, and Gena Rowlands stepping in as Marjane’s worldly-wise grandmother with a great line in bitchy, conspiratorial put-downs.

[The Incredible Blog] The Incredible Blog : Persepolis (Spoilers, methinks): I appreciated the black and white look, and the simple yet affectionate renderings. I thought the film worked very well visually, both in humorous scenes of Marjane as a Bruce Lee-obsessed child, and in brutal scenes of tanks rolling over the land, and mass executions of dissidents.

[Movie Mom] Persepolis - Movie Mom: A brief moment of hope following his overthrow was shattered when the Islamic fundamentalists took over and banned any trappings of Western decadence. In one scene, Satrapi defiantly wears a jacket that says "Punk is not Ded" and is almost arrested for buying rock music and wearing a Michael Jackson button.

[DVD Talk DVD Reviews] Persepolis : DVD Talk Review of the Theatrical: Marjane Satrapi's story is one that provides rare insight into a country we don't get accurate portrayals of very often. It could also be an overly charged, issue-driven story if she had chosen to make it so, but instead Satrapi has tied her own personal journey from child to woman to the story about the changes that went on all around her.
