At once the police began to beat them so severely that even male passers-by were upset.

Now as someone who remembers being able to buy a packet of smokes before they were plastered with huge labels warning that cigerettes cause all of the worlds evil upon and including global warming(probably) I can say that I know of not one person who has given up because of those warnings.
