[MARC] It's often forgotten in the west that the 1979 Iranian revolution that removed the western-leaning shah from power was driven by leftists and communists as well as Islamists, and many of the top musicians in Iran were part of the revolutionary Chavosh (Herald) movement that sought a return to Persian musical traditions in the face of the Shah's westernisation. Most of the premier league of Iranian musicians - Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, Mohammad-Reza Lotfi and Hossein Alizadeh - performed a celebrated concert soon after the revolution in Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square.

[Untitled] Nazenin Ansari: Iran's new leaders built their state on ...: The Islamic revolution, which promised to bring democracy and prosperity to Iran, instead built its foundations on the rubble of chronic repression, poverty, mismanagement and corruption. Images of the corpses of hundreds of thousands of young boys strewn across the deserts of southern Iran holding plastic keys "to open the gates of heaven", men and women hanging from cranes, dissidents assassinated abroad, intellectuals murdered at home, razed mosques belonging to clerics advocating separation of mosque from state, drug addicts languishing on the streets, underage girls smuggled for prostitution to neighbouring states by gangs, ethnic minorities being gunned down, burnt-out university dorms and the scars of torture on the bodies of those who dared to object: these shall forever symbolise the reactionary, brutish yet inept rule of those in charge of the revolution and the Islamic Republic.

[Untitled] BELLACIAO - Promoting Understanding - Part I - Dave Eriqat: You need to listen yourself to the delightful, tranquil Persian music with its majestic and charming captivation in order to grasp realistically that what the art significantly is referred to in the ancient land of Iran, and behold tangibly that the delicate and subtle aptitude of art has taken its roots into the heart, mind and soul of Iranians for a long time.
[Untitled] Golden Ring « Radiodiffusion Internasionaal Annexe: I’ve been hoping for an in-depth comp of the pre-Revolutionary Iranian scene for a long time. Seems like someone has to put one together eventually.
[Untitled] Letters | Arts & Culture | Smithsonian Magazine: Weary of Russian loans, Mozaffar al-Din Shah awarded an oil concession to the financier William D'Arcy that covered most of Iran, save a few provinces bordering Russia. Knowing Iran's hold on Khuzestan was weak, the British negotiated through local Bakhtiari clans for access, land purchases and protection, then extracted oil with little concern for just royalties to the central government.
[Untitled] Iran Coverage Persia: Ancient Soul of Iran |: The recorded history of the country itself spans some 2,500 years, culminating in today’s Islamic Republic of Iran, formed in 1979 after a revolution inspired in part by conservative clerics cast out the Western-backed shah. It’s arguably the world’s first modern constitutional theocracy and a grand experiment: Can a country be run effectively by holy men imposing an extreme version of Islam on a people soaked in such a rich Persian past?

[Untitled] Newspaper for Month of October 2008 Issue/Sarbazan « Shirinneshat ...: It is obvious, in case Senator Obama is elected as US president, it means the cleric regime is in a familiar territory of former US president Jimmy Carter, if Senator McCain is elected as US president, it may means real danger posing on Iran’s nuclear facilities, and the US may launch 73 hours preemptive military assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Obviously, Iranian need to convince Senator John McCain not to use military force against Iran, which would not do any good for anyone, but to support Iranian to do regime change in Iran and not with rhetoric words, and with regard to Senator Obama, who wants to follow and enforce former democrat US president Jimmy Carter which brought the regime in Iran.
[Untitled] Eteraz Online : اعتراض Ø¢ÙÙاÛÙ: Stephen Kinzer: Inside Iran's Fury: In one of the most astonishing political turnarounds of the 20th century, the Shah, who many in Washington and elsewhere had come to see as invulnerable, was overthrown and forced to flee. He left Iran on January 16, 1979, and after stays in Egypt, Morocco, the Bahamas and Mexico, was admitted to the United States for medical treatment on October 22 of that year.
[Untitled] Books on Iran & Iranian Culture :: Iran Visitor: Part biography and part political history, Amir Taheris "The Spirit of Allah" (a direct translation of Khomeinis given name, "Ruhollah") is at once a detailed examination of the revolution in Iran and a three-dimensional portrait of the man whose almost gravitational centrality to it made him one of the most important and controversial figures of the late twentieth century. Beginning with his ancestry and birth and continuing to within months of his death in 1989, the book documents Khomeinis early struggles to establish himself as a religious teacher and his life in exile and growing influence over Iranian politics from abroad, culminating with his return to Iran and the first troubled years of the Islamic Republic.
[Untitled] Reprised: Obamas Blunders Tell Me Hes a Naive Neophyte : NO QUARTER: blind support for the shah’s brutal regime, Iranians thrilled to Carter’s promise to re-brand America’s image abroad by focusing on human rights. That call even let many moderate, middle-class Iranians dare to hope that they might ward off the popular revolution everyone knew was coming.

III: (I wonder if Carter has any desire to return to Iran since his ill-fated trip here on New Years Eve of 1978, shortly before the Shahs regime came suddently crashing down.) Its almost as if Reza Shahs grandson is going to come .
[Untitled] Bush, Iran, and reality | Crooks and Liars: The dawn of democracy in Iran, started in late 1880, flickered by democratically elected Mossadegh, was extinguished. This was the beginning of Iranian servitude once more to the interests of England and the United States.

[Untitled] Harrys Place » Is Durham University Partnering with the Islamic ...: In essence, the imperialism of the mullahs is based on their assumed legitimate leadership in the Islamic world, as opposed to the imperialism of the Pahlavi Shahs which was based on Aryan supremacism (and which antagonised the Arabs and limited Iranian influence). The regime still, nonetheless, regards Bahrain as a province just as China regards Taiwan as a province and that eventually it will be won back and will rejoin the fatherland - in the process, enhancing Iran’s control over the Gulf’s strategic and economic resources (which is its real motive).
