Iran Reviews > t r u t h o u t | Bush Pushes Persian Gulf Nuclear Agreement

[Untitled]     The Bush administration, which has been in initial discussions on nuclear cooperation with other countries in the region including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, argues the UAE deal would serve as a model since it includes tight controls on the use and disposal of nuclear fuel and stipulates intrusive international inspections of facilities. But the region's volatility and Iran's growing influence dictate a more cautious approach, the congressional aide says.

The six countries that have offered Iran a package of incentives to resolve the nuclear issue – China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – have proposed various means of guaranteeing Iran that it would have reliable access to foreign sources of reactor fuel as long as it complies with its nonproliferation obligations."

Meh! - Banking & Finance - ArabianBusiness.com: The years of difficulties, delays and doublespeak suggest that there is more chance of Bahrain winning the football World Cup in 2010, than there is of you or I being asked to settle a bill in khaleeji, or whatever Gulf leaders elect to name the currency.

[Untitled] Rachel Maddow Guest Ron Suskind Condemns Iraq as Allegedly Unique ...: It should also be stated unequivocally that it is in no small part attributable to the Iraq War that this country, and much of the West, has been safe from many major terrorist attacks for the last five years.  If you examine the record of terrorist incidents from 2003-2008 you will find that the great majority of terrorist attacks trend to cluster in Iraq and the incidents outside of Iraq diminish in scope and intensity.  There are anomalies to be sure, but the majority of terrorist incidents outside of Iraq and Afghanistan are commited by Marxist organizations, such as in Nepal, Tibet, and by FARC in Columbia, with some Islamic radicalism notably in Palestine, Bangladesh and Indonesia.  The West was struck in London and Madrid, but there have been precious few attacks in North America, and the majority of these were carried out by eco-terrorist groups like ELF.  The period of Bush's presidency saw fewer major terrorist attacks on U.S. soil since 9/11 than during the presidency of Bill Clinton.

[Untitled] Pundits Debate the Inevitability of a Nuclear Iran - by Ali Gharib: The lack of diplomacy since the Bush administration began pursuing its aggressive post-9/11 strategies to remake the Middle East is predicated at least partially on the neoconservative worldview that talking to enemies gives them credibility and, therefore, puts them in a position of strength. That view often stipulates that pre-talk conditions need to be met before a serious effort at engagement can be made.

However, in a reversal of policy, the Bush administration has not used auctions for any of the $335 billion committed so far from the rescue package, nor does it plan to use them in the future.

[Untitled] KABOBfest: Israel's PR campaign to recruit support for killing: There is a difference between deciding to end a ceasefire, and deciding to not renew it, which is the accurate characterization of what happened. However, the point missed (or ignored) by so many is that Israel destroyed any chance of continuing the ceasefire when it used the spectacle of the US Presidential election on November 3rd as a cover to carry out a series of attacks within the Gaza Strip, and then completely seal the territory's borders ever since.
